- Grammar pet peeve: The misconception passed along by many English teachers— including mine—that we should never end a sentence with a preposition. There’s no such prohibition in the rules of English grammar. The misunderstanding stems from an aspect of Latin syntax that when applied to English sentences can result in the kind of awkward constructions that inspired Winston Churchill to say, “This is the sort of nonsense up with which I will not put.”
